24 Thoughts for 2024

1) We spend half of our life trying to look older and the other half trying to look younger.

2) Your ability to be happy for someone else’s success is in direct correlation with your ability to happy with yourself.

3) People think money changes people. It does not. Money just amplifies the person you were before you had money.

4) Talent is overrated. Hard work, tenacity, and grit out beats, out plays, and out lasts talent all day, any day.

5) We are told not to talk about religion and politics at the dinner table. If that is true, I hope we can learn to understand and respect different faiths and political beliefs during breakfast and lunch.

6) In ten years, the SAT and ACT college entrance exams will become extinct. Colleges should care more about the kind of student and person you were over the last four years, rather than how well you can take a test in four hours.

7) If you think you are a Heart-Led Leader, you are probably not. If you think you are a servant leader, you are probably not. If you think you are a great leader, you are probably not.

8) The three most important qualities in a heart-led leader are humility, humility, and humility.

9) I worry about the next generation’s obsession with texting, snapping, and tweeting – that they miss the opportunity to look up and love & serve the person in front of them.

10) The average person in the world influences 80,000 people in their lifetime. Here is the math:  Most people meet 2.8 new people a day. Multiply that number by 365 days. Then multiply that number by the average life expectancy of 78 years. And you get 80,000.

11) There are two types of leaders in the world: Those that are full of themselves. And those that are full of others.

12) Self-serving leaders focus on their income. Heart-Led Leaders focus on their outcome.

13) It is easy to love people that are easy to love. It is hard to love people that are hard to love. But we are called to love all people, even the hard ones.

14) There is not a hiring manager in the world that values talent over tenacity. Talent may open the door, but tenacity will keep that door from hitting you in the ass!

15) People once believed the world was flat. Our schools were segregated. Women smoked during pregnancy. Love did not belong in the workplace. Clearly, we have not always had it right.

16) If you try to win someone’s business, you’ve got a transaction. If you try and win their heart, you’ve earned a lifelong client and customer relationship.

17) Customer Service is more than just servicing your customers. It is building an authentic relationship with them. It is loving them, and it is being a positive influence in their lives. Only then can you truly serve your customers.

18) For centuries, the smartest person in the room was often the leader. Today, the person who surrounds themselves with the smartest people in the room is the leader.

19) We are told since toddlers to avoid risk. But those that embrace calculated risk have the greatest rewards in their lives and their careers.

20) Managers listen to what people are thinking. Leaders listens to what people are feeling. There is a difference. A big difference.

21) There use to be 2,323 Kmart Stores around the nation. Today there are only three stores remaining. Walmart, Target, and Amazon ate their lunch.  Someone will eat our lunch if we don’t embrace change, innovation, and leadership.

22) Our greatest legacy in our lives is the positive (and negative) influence we have on those we love and serve.

23) What defines your job and your organization is not what products or services you provide, but the relationships you have with the people you provide these products and services to.

24) Investing unselfishly in the lives of others is the most important thing we can do for ourselves, our organizations, our communities, and our world.
